While Dave has been busy creating some new works for the upcoming fall show in Wausau, WI as well as preparing for his August events at the Peninsula School of Art in Door County, WI (read on to learn more), his artwork has been traveling the country and winning awards.



Theremin wins awards in California and New Jersey

Work from Dave’s Electronic Music Series has been exhibited quite a bit this year. Most notably in April when “Theremin” won the Digital Art Guild Award at the Museum of the Living Artist’s 51st International Exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) in Balboa Park, San Diego, California.  Juror Roxana Velásquez Martínez del Campo (commonly known as Roxana Velásquez) is the Executive Director of the San Diego Museum of Art which also located in Balboa Park. Born in the U.S. and raised in Mexico, Velásquez has pursued professional, civic, and cultural endeavors at three major national museums in Mexico City. She has served as the Director of Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Museo Nacional de Arte (Munal), and most recently Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes – elevating each institution to international recognition.

The last week of June, “Theremin” won an Honorable Mention award at Digital Works, a national juried exhibition held by the Long Beach Island Foundation (LBIF) at their facility on the island in Loveladies, New Jersey. Photos of the NJ event feature this year’s juror Christiane Paul, an Associate Professor and Director of Media Studies at the New School and Adjunct Curator for New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of Art, both in New York City. Digital Works, which closes July 19, also includes “Carlos.”

In addition, we recently received the catalog from the Fortieth Annual Northwest Art Center’s Americas 2011: Paperworks exhibition. Held earlier this year in Minot, North Dakota, this national exhibition juried by artist/art professor Victoria Goro-Rappoort included both “Theremin” and “Reich.”

Also earlier in the year, “Eno” was on display at Systems, a national juried exhibition held at the Allen Priebe Art Gallery on the UW Oshkosh campus in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Dana Sperry, artist and Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Media at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, OH served as juror.



Peninsula School of Art, Fish Creek, WI – August 4-6

On Thursday, August 4 from 4:30 to 6:30pm, Dave will give a talk: “Landscapes, Soundscapes, and Digital Art” that will discuss the concepts behind his artwork and the experimental techniques he uses to create it. He will talk about landscapes being both subject and inspiration for his work and how the notion of “hearing a landscape” guides his creative process. An informal format will allow for questions during the presentation.

Dave will also be giving a three-day workshop (August 4-6) on “Basic Color Management: Print Your Fine Art Photos.” The workshop will focus on how color management allows artists and photographers to achieve consistent, predictable results when printing images. Demonstrations will include how to profile monitors and printers and how to work with ICC profiles. Class size is limited.

Color – Center for the Visual Arts, Wausau

Later this fall, Dave’s landscapes will be featured in Color (September 23 – November 6), a group show at the Center for Visual Arts (CVA) in Wausau, Wisconsin.  Besides Dave’s art, Color will feature the work of Christine Alfery and Denise Cawley. The reception will be held on Friday, September 30 – that’s one week after the show opens – from 5 to 7pm at the gallery on the ArtsBlock in downtown Wausau.  Think about heading north for an inspiring look at color – both inside the gallery and out on the road.

New Works on Display

Next month, “Summer Lake” will be on display at the Circle Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland in American Landscapes (August 12 – September 10). American Landscapes is a national juried exhibition hosted by the Maryland Federation of Art. Jack Rasmussen, Director & Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Art Center in Washington DC, served as this year’s juror. Circle Gallery was voted the best gallery in Annapolis for 2011 and is open Tuesday through Sunday 11am to 5pm.

Also next month, “Conversation I, II, & III” will be on display in Art at the X, (August 26 – September 23) a national juried exhibition at the Xavier University Art Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio. The gallery is located on campus on the first floor of the A.B. Cohen Center and open Monday through Friday 10am to 4pm. These three images from the Conversation Series – on display here at Carta StudioWorks for the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art’s Spring Gallery Night in May – were juried into Art at the X by Deborah Emont Scott. Scott, after twenty years working at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO, returned to Ohio a couple years ago to become the Director / CEO of the Taft Museum in Cincinnati.

May’s Spring Gallery Night also featured some new landscape works: “Past Glory,” “Evening Sets,” “Morning Starts,” and “Abiquiu II.”  These works as well as two new works – “Summer Lake” and “Night Snow” – can be viewed as the first six images in our landscapes web gallery (opens in new window).

Some of the Electronic Music Series were also on display here at Carta for Spring Gallery Night. The May 6 event was the first time a new piece in the series, “Stria,” had been displayed publicly.  We are proud to say that the first print in the edition of six is now in a corporate collection in Milwaukee, WI. The artwork was inspired by a musical composition called Stria by John Chowning so it’s only fitting that the first print of “Chowning” also hangs in the same collection.

Studio and Gallery Visits

The arctic air may have been in control here in the Upper Midwest this past week, but it’s always warm enough for an art reception – two in fact.

Americas 2011: Paperworks (Jan 10 – Feb 18) at the Northwest Art Center held its artists reception on Wednesday, January 19 in the Hartnett Hall Gallery on the Minot State University campus in Minot, North Dakota.  Dave has two works – Reich and Theremin – from his electronic music series in the Americas exhibit which is celebrating its 40th edition.  The reception featured a gallery talk by juror Victoria Goro-Rapoport to discuss her selections for the exhibition.  Read more about Americas 2011: Paperworks in the Minot Daily News.

Midwest Seasons (formerly Midwest Winter) opened its annual exhibition on Friday, January 21 at the Center for the Visual Arts in downtown Wausau, WI.  The exhibit runs through March 6.  Juror Diane Canfield Bywaters, a professional artist as well as professor of drawing and painting at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, selected work from 45 artists for this exhibit now in its 21st year.  As an award winner in previous years, Dave was pleased to again be among the chosen artists.  This year Fall Birch was selected for the exhibition. Dave and I were able to attend the reception and enjoyed seeing the work, talking with folks from the area, and meeting other artists.
