Textural Patois Opening Reception at the Allen Priebe Art Gallery

What an experience to walk into the Textural Patois exhibition and see Dave’s 2D work complementing a room full of tactile 3D work.  The juror, Susie Ganch, a metal sculptor, predominately chose sculpture and jewelry to explore the exhibition’s theme – using texture as a visual language.  As I mentioned in a previous blog entry about this exhibit, both Dave and I felt that “Dismembered Lakes” and ” Crushed by the Blues” emphasize both texture and color to give the pieces meaning.  I’m glad the juror saw that texture in a two-dimensional photographic print and included Dave’s work in the exhibition.

UW Oshkosh, especially the Gallery Director Andrew Redington, and his assistant, Anna Hill, put together a great show.  The opening reception was well-attended and we enjoyed looking at the work of two dozen artists.  Susie Ganch was able to attend and discuss her reasoning for choosing a variety of the pieces. We also enjoyed seeing and hearing about her work in the “Bits and Pieces” (February 2 – 27) solo show in the Annex Gallery.

Thanks to everyone who worked on this exhibition.  Look for video from the opening at the Allen Priebe Art Gallery website soon.

Textural Patois

Texture – it’s an important component in so much of Dave’s work – so we were excited when we saw the call for submissions to Textural Patois, a national juried exhibition focused on “using texture as a visual language.”

As it happened, Dave and I each picked a favorite “textural” image for submittal.  Mine was “Dismembered Lakes” – I love the way the somewhat irregular rectangles are filled with etchings that remind me of gauze draped and pulled over disappearing but curvy bodies of water.

Dave’s choice was “Crushed by the Blues” – an image he worked on diligently to create a sense of depth and foreboding.

Both images are studies in different textural treatments – and late last week we learned that both have been selected by juror Susie Ganch to hang in the show.  The opening reception for Textural Patois will be held on Thursday, February 25 from 7-9pm at the Allen Priebe Art Gallery at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in Oshkosh, WI.   The exhibit will be on display from February 18 – March 7.   We’re looking forward to the show!
