Featuring the work of Dave Tilton and Christine Alfery, the CVA Board of Directors and Friends of CVA sponsored this exhibit organized around the concept of color calling it “a complex gauge for energy, emotion, and expression.” Both artists will have nearly two dozen pieces on display in CVA’s beautiful gallery space at 427 N. Fourth St. on the ArtsBlock in downtown Wausau. Dave and Christine will speak briefly about their work at the artists reception held next week on Friday, September 30 from 5-7pm.

Color will also be on display during the CVA’s fall fundraising tradition: the Art of Wine. Held on Friday, October 8 from 6 to 9pm, over 40 wines rarely available in Wausau will be served with accompanying foods cooked up by the City Grill at Jefferson Street Inn. Expect regional wines and food flavors from South America, Europe, California, Pacific Northwest, and Wisconsin.
Winter Lake Day featured in Welcome Home, the 2012 Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission Art Calendar

“Winter Lake Day” graces the month of February in Welcome Home, the 2012 Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission Art Calendar. In its thirteenth edition, sales of the annual art calendar help support the Commission’s mission and programs to foster public participation, increase access, and forge alliances in support of arts, culture and local history. Alliant Energy provided generous support for the 2012 edition which is available for sale at the Commission’s office in the City-County Building in downtown Madison as well as from local sales partners located throughout Dane County. ”Winter Lake Day” (25″ x 40″) has been a popular work – only one print in the edition of 6 remains available for sale. The same is true of another image also seen on the 2011 Dane County Cultural Affairs Commission Art Poster – only one print of “Winter Sky” (42″ x 42″) remains available. Please contact us or Grace Chosy Gallery if you’re interested in a purchase.

August in Door County inspires new works

You may remember that Dave gave a lecture and taught a workshop in early August at the Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, WI. For those of you not familiar with Fish Creek – it’s a centrally located community on Door County’s northern peninsula. Northern Door County, Wisconsin is a special treasure with harbors and bays of both Green Bay and Lake Michigan creating interesting vistas and intersections of land and water from many protected conservancy areas (including state and county parks) while inland natural meadows, wetlands, and woods co-exist with orderly farm fields and rows of cherry and apple trees in orchards.

Dave is currently creating new work inspired by our time there. Here’s an early preview of “Spilt Cherry Road” (top) and “Maple Grove” (below).

Dave Tilton, Maple Grove, ©2011

Studio and Gallery Visits

We’re always happy to have gurests so please let us know if you’ll be in Madison and want to schedule a studio visit as we’re only open by appointment. We still have some 2011 posters. Dave’s work is also at Grace Chosy Gallery on Monroe Street in Madison. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. If there is a particular piece of work you’d like to see – drop us an email: info@cartastudioworks.com or contact Karin Ketarkus at the gallery (staff@gracechosygallery.com). We would be happy to arrange a time for you to stop by the studio or we can drop it off at Grace Chosy if that is more convenient.

Theremin wins awards in California and New Jersey

Work from Dave’s Electronic Music Series has been exhibited quite a bit this year. Most notably in April when “Theremin” won the Digital Art Guild Award at the Museum of the Living Artist’s 51st International Exhibition at the San Diego Art Institute (SDAI) in Balboa Park, San Diego, California. Juror Roxana Velásquez Martínez del Campo (commonly known as Roxana Velásquez) is the Executive Director of the San Diego Museum of Art which also located in Balboa Park. Born in the U.S. and raised in Mexico, Velásquez has pursued professional, civic, and cultural endeavors at three major national museums in Mexico City. She has served as the Director of Museo Nacional de San Carlos, Museo Nacional de Arte (Munal), and most recently Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes – elevating each institution to international recognition.

The last week of June, “Theremin” won an Honorable Mention award at Digital Works, a national juried exhibition held by the Long Beach Island Foundation (LBIF) at their facility on the island in Loveladies, New Jersey. Photos of the NJ event feature this year’s juror Christiane Paul, an Associate Professor and Director of Media Studies at the New School and Adjunct Curator for New Media Arts at the Whitney Museum of Art, both in New York City. Digital Works, which closes July 19, also includes “Carlos.”

In addition, we recently received the catalog from the Fortieth Annual Northwest Art Center’s Americas 2011: Paperworks exhibition. Held earlier this year in Minot, North Dakota, this national exhibition juried by artist/art professor Victoria Goro-Rappoort included both ”Theremin” and “Reich.”

Also earlier in the year, “Eno” was on display at Systems, a national juried exhibition held at the Allen Priebe Art Gallery on the UW Oshkosh campus in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Dana Sperry, artist and Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Media at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, OH served as juror.

Peninsula School of Art, Fish Creek, WI – August 4-6

On Thursday, August 4 from 4:30 to 6:30pm, Dave will give a talk: “Landscapes, Soundscapes, and Digital Art” that will discuss the concepts behind his artwork and the experimental techniques he uses to create it. He will talk about landscapes being both subject and inspiration for his work and how the notion of “hearing a landscape” guides his creative process. An informal format will allow for questions during the presentation.

Dave will also be giving a three-day workshop (August 4-6) on “Basic Color Management: Print Your Fine Art Photos.” The workshop will focus on how color management allows artists and photographers to achieve consistent, predictable results when printing images. Demonstrations will include how to profile monitors and printers and how to work with ICC profiles. Class size is limited.

Both the workshop and talk will be held at the Peninsula School of Art at 3900 County Highway F, Fish Creek, WI – a great school in a beautiful place. For more information or to register, contact the school at 920-868-3455 or www.peninsulaschoolofart.com.

Color – Center for the Visual Arts, Wausau

Later this fall, Dave’s landscapes will be featured in Color (September 23 – November 6), a group show at the Center for Visual Arts (CVA) in Wausau, Wisconsin. Besides Dave’s art, Color will feature the work of Christine Alfery and Denise Cawley. The reception will be held on Friday, September 30 – that’s one week after the show opens – from 5 to 7pm at the gallery on the ArtsBlock in downtown Wausau. Think about heading north for an inspiring look at color – both inside the gallery and out on the road.

New Works on Display

Next month, “Summer Lake” will be on display at the Circle Gallery in Annapolis, Maryland in American Landscapes (August 12 – September 10). American Landscapes is a national juried exhibition hosted by the Maryland Federation of Art. Jack Rasmussen, Director & Curator of the American University Museum at the Katzen Art Center in Washington DC, served as this year’s juror. Circle Gallery was voted the best gallery in Annapolis for 2011 and is open Tuesday through Sunday 11am to 5pm.

Also next month, “Conversation I, II, & III” will be on display in Art at the X, (August 26 – September 23) a national juried exhibition at the Xavier University Art Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio. The gallery is located on campus on the first floor of the A.B. Cohen Center and open Monday through Friday 10am to 4pm. These three images from the Conversation Series – on display here at Carta StudioWorks for the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art’s Spring Gallery Night in May – were juried into Art at the X by Deborah Emont Scott. Scott, after twenty years working at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO, returned to Ohio a couple years ago to become the Director / CEO of the Taft Museum in Cincinnati.

May’s Spring Gallery Night also featured some new landscape works: “Past Glory,” “Evening Sets,” “Morning Starts,” and “Abiquiu II.” These works as well as two new works – “Summer Lake” and “Night Snow” – can be viewed as the first six images in our landscapes web gallery (opens in new window).

Some of the Electronic Music Series were also on display here at Carta for Spring Gallery Night. The May 6 event was the first time a new piece in the series, “Stria,” had been displayed publicly. We are proud to say that the first print in the edition of six is now in a corporate collection in Milwaukee, WI. The artwork was inspired by a musical composition called Stria by John Chowning so it’s only fitting that the first print of “Chowning” also hangs in the same collection.
